The city of San Francisco is regarded as one of the most important and well-known cities on the west coast. It is the hub of unique architectural feats, a diverse population, and the center of new AI technology and business. The scenery of the bay area and the Golden Gate Bridge make the city one of the most unique cities in the country. However, the homeless crisis in San Francisco has been ongoing since the 1970s and has been a top priority for the city and the residents of San Francisco to change. Many different times, we hear about the news and updates of the homeless crisis and what is going on through the news, and we hear the city government take charge and explain what they are doing to change the situation. The mayor, Daniel Lurie, talks about his program, “Break the Cycle”, and explains he will give beds to those who need them. We also hear from frustrated business owners about the homeless individuals who find shelter outside their business buildings. The homeless of San Francisco are treated more as objects that should and can be moved out of the way, rather than human beings who have no choice but to live the life they live most of the time.
The residents of San Francisco and people who listen in rarely ever hear the stories, personal struggles, and input those who live on the streets can provide. They have limited representation to the community and the city government. In addition, organizations such as the Coalition on Homelessness give clarity to what is actually happening in the city when it tries to tackle the homeless crisis. The “sweeps” that the city does, to clean the streets and sidewalks, are challenges and change the lives of the homeless. Not only do they move them from where they are living, the sweeps take away survival gear such as tents for the homeless while taking the only community they have. Other organizations such as St. Anthony's have emphasized a more dignified approach to helping the homeless move off the streets and find shelters and places where they can live and change their lives for the better. St. Anthony's provides food and shelter for those who need it. The people we should listen to and hear what they have to say about this situation are the ones affected by it - those living on the streets. Their personal struggles and insight to their situation will help the city take better action and care for the homeless.
